Layered Self
36" x 14" x 14" stoneware, terracotta, and porcelain, 2023.
As we grow and age, our being seems to shift, rendering past versions of ourselves unfamiliar. Yet these selves remain a part of us, informing and supporting our current identities. In one’s emotional timeline, there are distinctions between selves, sometimes blurred, sometimes fractured and peeling apart. Layered Self creates a strata of material and personal history, pressing together multiple clays with different appearances and temperaments. When pieced together, these conflicting personalities accumulate into a single, fractured whole.
